چکیده

We study the nucleosynthesis and the induced mixing during the merging of massive stars inside a common envelope. The systems of interest are close binaries, initially consisting of a massive red supergiant and a main-sequence companion of a few solar masses. We apply parameterized results based on hydrodynamical simulations to model the stream-core interaction and the response of the star in a standard stellarevolution code. Preliminary results are presented illustrating the possibility of unusual nucleosynthesis and post-merging dredge-up which can cause composition anomalies in the supergiant’s envelope.

Mixing in massive stellar mergers

The early evolution of dense star clusters is possibly dominated by close interactions between stars, and physical collisions between stars may occur quite frequently. Simulating a stellar collision event can be an intensive numerical task, as detailed calculations of this process require hydrodynamic simulations in three dimensions. We present a computationally inexpensive method in which we a...

The Detection of Extragalactic 15 N: Consequences for Nitrogen Nucleosynthesis and Chemical Evolution

Detections of extragalactic N are reported from observations of the rare hydrogen cyanide isotope HCN toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the core of the (post-) starburst galaxy NGC4945. Accounting for optical depth effects, the LMC data from the massive star-forming region N113 infer a N/N ratio of 111 ± 17, about twice the C/C value. For the LMC star-forming region N159HW and for the...

Contribution of High–mass Black Holes to Mergers of Compact Binaries

We consider the merging of high-mass black-hole binaries of the Cyg X–1 type, in which the O–star companion becomes a neutron star following a supernova explosion. Our estimated rate of mergers, ∼ 2× 10yr for the Galaxy, is relatively low because of the paucity of high–mass black holes. None the less, because of their high masses, these black-hole, neutron-star binaries could contribute importa...

Mixing in Zero and Solar Metallicity Supernovae

Two-dimensional simulations of mixing and fall back in non-rotating massive stars have been carried out using realistic initial models for the presupernova star and assuming standard spherically symmetric explosions of 1.2×10erg. Stars of 15 and 25 M with both primordial and solar composition were modeled. The zero metallicity supernova progenitors were compact blue stars and the amount of Rayl...

Early and Rapid Merging as a Formation Mechanism of Massive Galaxies: Empirical Constraints

We present the results of a series of empirical computations regarding the role of major mergers in forming the stellar masses of modern galaxies based on measurements of galaxy merger and star formation histories from z ∼ 0.5 − 3. We re-construct the merger history of normal field galaxies from z ∼ 3 to z ∼ 0 as a function of initial mass using published pair fractions and merger fractions fro...
